The Fear of Starting Something – What Are We Scared Of? Episode One

In this inaugural episode of What Are We Scared Of?, I go into quite a bit of detail about the Fear of Starting Something, talking about “anticipatory anxiety” through the lens of four classic games: Celeste, the Beginner’s Guide, SOMA, and Journey.

Throughout, I weave in personal experiences alongside many literary references, though I had to pare those back a lot compared to my first draft. Still, I think I get my point across as well as anyone could be expected to for a very first video.

In the day or so it has been posted, I’ve realized that I am not back at the bottom of the Sisyphean mountain; that I finished something I started, and that it is now time to start again. I talk about this feeling a bit in the video, but that doesn’t actually make it any easier to face. The constant questions of “am I on the right path” or “did I do the right thing” cloud my mind, and now I need to make sure to not let them stop me. Momentum is everything, after all.

Regardless, I intended to keep making these, and eventually maybe something will come of them. I am also going to be uploading miniature versions of my reviews as YouTube Shorts, if anyone reading this wants some bite-sized critique. And, if you are reading this… well, it means that you are already here, and probably interested in my work, so you should probably make sure you subscribe to my YouTube channel if you haven’t already.
